International Division Summer Camps

The International Division of No. 2 High School of East China Normal University has been doing summer camps for more than 1,000 foreign students from over 20 countries since 2006.

1. Shanghai’s International Sister Cities Summer Camp by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission

Our school started to serve as a base of national Hanban for international promotion of the Chinese language in 2006.  Since 2007, it has hosted Shanghai’s International Sister Cities Summer Camp organized by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission for 5 consecutive years, receiving about 500 students and leading teachers from over 10 countries including France, Germany, UK, US, Canada, Japan, Korea and Chile. The camp lasts two weeks from mid July to August. Our school has carefully designed various traditional Chinese cultural programs, martial art courses and traditional Chinese sports programs for foreign campers.  Besides, experienced teachers from our school are assigned to teach Chinese language classes suitable for campers.  When the camp is over, campers are able to talk about daily life in simple Chinese and they get to know more about Shanghai and China.

2. “Gathering in Shanghai Summer/Winter Camp for Young Ethnic Chinese” by Shanghai Overseas Chinese Affairs Office

Our school was entitled a base of Shanghai Overseas Chinese Affairs Office for Chinese language promotion in 2006.  Since then, our International Division has been receiving over 1,000 young ethnic Chinese from countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, UAE, Canada and US to help them learn Chinese language and culture and get to know about Shanghai and China.  Our school has designed programs tailor-made for them, including Chinese language, sports and culture.  We have also arranged for them to experience daily life of a common Shanghai family and to visit landmark sites so that they get to know the real Shanghai in the past, at present and in the future.

3. Summer Camp of “Elite Chinese and Foreign Youth Forum”by Shanghai Overseas Chinese Affairs Office

The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Shanghai has invited young people from Germany and France to the Youth Forum for them to know about Shanghai and China and to encourage the interaction between Chinese and foreign young people.  Our school has hosted the event many times.  We have invited university professors to give campers lectures and arranged for them to go sightseeing in Shanghai.

4. AP Chinese Language Summer Camp

To boost the exchange between American sister schools and our school for more programs and new approaches and to increase foreign students’ passion in learning Chinese, our school has been doing one-month AP Chinese Language Summer Camp for a few times.  We have designed immerse Chinese language courses, Chinese cultural programs and sightseeing tailored to campers’ needs.  Campers are also required to bring research topics to Shanghai and bring back research results to their own countries.  Topics include a comparison between China and the US and social investigation.  Campers have gained a lot from doing researches.

5.Other Summer Camps

Our school is in collaboration with Chinese language institutions in countries such as France, Spain, Italy, Korea and Japan for Chinese language summer camps.  We invite Chinese language learners from around the world to come and join our 3-week summer camps.  We design practical Chinese programs focusing on listening and speaking abilities tailor-made for them.  We also offer Chinese cultural programs and sports courses.  Besides, we carefully select some symbolic sites for campers to visit so that they get to know Shanghai and China better.
